Down from the mountains

The train ride was pretty good! We climbed slowly across the plains of Kansas towards the mountains of Colorado, and then down the other side into New Mexico. We were also forced to speak to some of our fellow passengers as we were seated at tables of four for lunch. They were actually quite pleasant, even the lady wearing the “I believe in Jesus” T-shirt.

Albuquerque is a strange place. It’s probably our fault for wandering out at night without any clue where we were headed. We found ourselves on what seemed to be the main drag, where kids who are too young to go into the bars and clubs drive up and down in their cars with the windows down and the music turned up. We scurried into a friendly looking diner where Hannah had Mexican and I stuck to pita bread. Still not feeling too clever.

Our hotel here is lovely. It’s an historically listed building, although I haven’t yet discovered what it’s famous for, and cheese and wine is served every evening at 5pm. There are complimentary snacks in the room and fresh cookies on the mantelpiece downstairs. It’s a welcome hideaway from the strangeness outdoors.

The weather is hot, and tomorrow we’re going to attempt to be intelligent and plan what we want to do. And put on suncream.

Wide open plains.

Yep, not much here...

...so here's a picture of the inside of the train.
